Fund Community Projects

Westmill Wind and Solar are rooted in community, and as part of this commitment, they offer annual grants to fund community projects which are designed to save energy and help the environment.

Established in 2009, Westmill Sustainable Energy Trust (WeSET) was set-up as a charity in 2009 as a way for Westmill Wind to contribute to the community in the local area. When Westmill Solar was formed in 2011, it also began to contribute annually to the work of WeSET.

The three organisations have continued to expand their community impact through offering grants, donations and project subsidies to other environmentally-focused groups. Individually and together, the Westmill organisations are motivated by providing funding for community projects at a local, regional, national and international level.

There are multiple funding mechanisms open to community organisations. Find out how to apply for a grant on our Community Funding page.

Rings of Impact

The Westmill organisations believe in rippling out impacts on a local, regional, national and international level.

As well as the annual community grants scheme, Westmill Solar Co-operative funds Low Carbon Hub, to support their work growing partnerships of people and organisations across Oxfordshire, working together, for a low carbon future.

In 2024, the Wiltshire Village Halls project was implemented. This expanded the existing Community Buildings Energy Assessments scheme, which provides funding to help community buildings to reduce energy use.

Westmill Solar also supports Renewable World, an organisation implementing renewable clean energy technologies internationally.

Community Grants Panel

Each year, a panel of Westmill Solar Co-operative members volunteer their time to review applications made to the community grants scheme.

If you would like to be part of this panel, please get in touch.

I support Westmill Solar because it directly benefits communities and individual investors in clean energy projects uncompromised by the conflicting interests of large corporations.

When I first saw the share offer for Westmill Solar I thought what a great idea, the interest is better than the banks. But that was not the main reason for investing, it was the idea I would be helping my son and others with a better cleaner future.

I like the fact that the wind farm is producing home grown renewable energy and is 100% community owned.

I am a DIY investor who started reading up on investing at university before taking the plunge by purchasing index funds in 2010. I am still very enthusiastic about renewable energy and thanks to a healthy interest payment every year, I haven't missed the money I've invested.

I became a shareholder in Westmill Wind Farm Co-operative because I wanted to take some responsibility for the energy that I was consuming. I also wanted to be part of a community that championed the move towards renewable energy.

I invested because I believe in local, renewable energy projects.

I have very little savings and no experience in stocks and shares but wanted to support your initiative. I thought that it might not lose money and possibly give a return equal to bank savings account.

I joined and invested in Westmill Windfarm Co-operative because I believe in the absolute necessity of switching to renewable generation, and preferably in community ownership - why is it taking so long?
